How to use and difficulty levels
My Canvas is a free web app that turns a photo into a numbered coloring template. There is nothing to install and no sign-up: it works right in your browser.
How to use
- Upload a photo - Drag a photo onto the box on the first screen, or click to choose one. JPG, PNG and WEBP files are supported.
- Choose a difficulty - Pick one of five levels. They differ in region size, number of colors and how you paint.
- Paint - Pick a color in the palette on the right and paint the regions that have the same number. You can turn the numbers on and off, and press "Find remaining regions" to locate what is left of the selected color.
- Finish and save - Press "Finish" to see your results with confetti. Save the artwork as PNG or JPG.
Five difficulty levels
Easy Mode
Medium regions, 16 colors. One click fills a region automatically, and only the correct color is accepted. Hints (auto-fill one remaining region) and undo are available.
Normal Mode
Small regions, 32 colors. Click to fill a region; wrong colors can be painted too. The eraser and undo are available.
Hard Mode
Small regions, 48 colors. All numbers are black, so compare them with the numbers in the palette. Wrong colors can be painted, and the eraser and undo are available.
Devil Mode
Works like Hard Mode, but no numbers appear on the canvas, so you match colors by eye. The eraser and undo are available.
Freestyle Mode
Medium regions, 16 colors. Instead of clicking regions, you paint freely with a brush. Choose a pencil, crayon, brush or marker and change its size. You can paint outside the lines, numbers are hidden by default, and undo is not available.
Controls
- Mouse wheel: zoom in and out (around the pointer)
- Hold the right mouse button and drag: move the view
- Hold Space: view the original photo (release to go back to painting)
- Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Shift+Z: undo / redo
- Phones and tablets: pinch with two fingers to zoom, drag with one finger to move the view, and long-press to see the original photo
Buttons
- 💡 Hint - Fills one remaining region for you. Easy Mode only.
- 🧽 Eraser - Turn it on and click a painted region to clear its color. Available in Normal, Hard and Devil; picking a color in the palette turns it off.
- ↶ Undo - Takes back your last paint or erase (Ctrl+Z). Redo is Ctrl+Shift+Z. Not available in Freestyle.
- Find remaining regions - Makes the unpainted regions of the selected color blink. The number in brackets is how many are left. If they are off screen, the view moves to one.
- Numbers / Outlines - Turn the numbers and region lines on or off. Devil Mode has no numbers button.
- ⤢ Fit to screen - Brings a zoomed or moved view back to the starting size.
- Download - Saves the current picture as a PNG. Numbers and outlines are saved as they are shown.
- Brushes - In Freestyle, pick a texture (pencil, crayon, brush, marker) and change the size with the slider.
- Finish - Ends the painting and opens the results screen.
- Show wrong regions - On the results screen, see the original and your painting side by side and which color each wrong region needed.
Results screen
When you finish, you see your completion, color accuracy, painted area, average error and time taken, along with a rank. Compare the original and your artwork side by side, see which regions are wrong and what colour they needed, and save a PNG, a JPG or a comparison image.
Ranks
The score is completion × 0.4 + color accuracy × 0.6.
- S+ - 98 points or more
- S - 90 to under 98 points
- A - 75 to under 90 points
- B - 55 to under 75 points
- C - Under 55 points
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. Your photo is processed only inside your browser and never leaves it.
Is my work saved?
Your progress is saved automatically in your browser. Use "Resume saved artwork" on the first screen to continue. Clearing the site data in your browser also deletes the saved artwork.
Does it work on smartphones?
Yes. It works on phones and tablets, with touch gestures for zooming and moving the view.
What kind of photo works best?
Photos with clear color boundaries make good templates. Photos are downsized before processing, so very fine patterns may blur. Start with Easy Mode, which has large regions.
The numbers are too small to read.
Zoom in. Use the mouse wheel to zoom and right-click drag to move the view. On a phone, spread two fingers to zoom and drag with one finger to move. The narrower a region is, the smaller its number is drawn, so narrow regions need more zoom to read. Holding the space bar shows the original photo, which also helps you see which part you are looking at.
Is it free?
Yes, it is free.
What photos can I upload?
Please use your own photos or images you have the right to use. Photos are not sent to a server, but sharing copyrighted images publicly may require the rights holder's permission.
